NABJ Remembers Sarah-Ann Shaw: NABJ Pillar & Boston's First Black Woman TV Reporter

In the early days of NABJ, Sarah-Ann Shaw was among the brave group of journalists and communicators working tirelessly behind the scenes to create an organization that would serve as a voice and advocate for Black journalists nationwide. And while she passed away on March 21 at the age of 90, her work as one of the pillars of NABJ will forever live on. According to Co-founder Allison Davis, while Shaw’s name wasn’t on the charter roster listing the 44 founding members of NABJ that were present in D.C. on Dec. 12, 1975, she still played a critical role in designing a community that would fight for fairness in America’s newsrooms.

A mentor, a teacher, a media mogul. This is how his former mentees and industry colleagues described James Washington when he was nominated for and received NABJ’s 2019 Legacy Award. NABJ selected Washington in recognition of the many barriers he broke across multiple industries and for the journalistic blueprints he left for others to follow. Washington passed away on April 2 at the age of 73, but his legacy of inspiration and impact will live on.
NABJ Appalled by Gray TV Affiliate KMOV’s Use of ‘Colored’ on Air

The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is appalled and disappointed by a recent incident at KMOV, Gray Television’s affiliate in St. Louis. While teasing a story about Black homeowners and appraisals, an anchor referred to the homeowners as “colored.”
